3 Lessons My Mommy Taught Me

Isn’t it crazy how when we are younger, we think what our parents have to say is meaningless and then you grow up realizing that it was all true? I can honestly say I learned early on that all the life lessons my mom taught me were not in vain and they made a lot of sense. Here are a few that stands out to me along with some extra meaning.

If God knows your heart is clean, that is all that matters

I will be the first to admit that I sometimes feel the urge to let my side of any story be known to the world. Maybe it is the Gemini in me, but I always feel like people need to know the truth especially in a confrontation. Now that I am older, I see the importance of not fighting every battle that comes your way. I can hear my mom saying, “God knows your heart” and that being all that matters. If the one who created, you know that you are telling the truth the rest is irrelevant. Even typing this out puts myself at ease.

What is for you is for you

If your experiencing any type of struggle in life right now or feel in competition with the world, just know that what God has dedicated for you no man can alter. My mom has instilled this lesson probably since the day she was holding me in the picture above. This mantra has proven itself true time and time again. Every time I thought I needed something or wanted something, and it did not happen something better always presented itself down the line.

Be a Lady always

If there is nothing my mommy taught me, she taught me how to be a woman. A strong woman at that, she taught me how to hold my own, take care of myself and my family. Because of her I know most things (my daddy taught me a fair amount too) like how cleanliness is next to godliness (funny how she thought I would keep my apartment a wreck because of my teenage room) and when to remove myself from certain situations. My mom always says “A lady always knows when to leave” and it’s true I always know when my time is up (relationships, jobs, places, etc.) and I exit in the most polite way.

My heart often aches for girls and women who never had a relationship with their mom, it is a bond that is truly indescribable, and I am very thankful for my nyya <3
